The internet has gone crazy over IHOP’s temporary name change to IHOB (International House of Burgers). The name change is just a temporary marketing gimmick to promote their new line of burgers. However, it reflects the fact that marketing gimmicks are becoming more and more common. Here are a couple of other well known stunts:
- Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino. The pink drink was famous for tasting sweet at first, then transitioning to sour. Starbucks offered the sparkly drink for a limited time. People flocked to Starbucks to buy the Frappuccino and taste the sweet-to-sour flavor. The drink helped generate valuable buzz for Starbucks.
- The Old Spice Commercials. The internet catapulted the funny Old Spice commercials to superstardom. The Old Spice Man became recognizable almost overnight. The commercials helped establish a funny, casual identity for the deodorant brand.
- Dos Equis’s Most Interesting Man in the World. This was another famous set of commercials that the internet made popular. The Most Interesting Man in the World would perform all sorts of crazy things, and look great doing it. Dos Equis managed to associate their product with fun and humor.
Great marketing campaigns and gimmicks can drive sales and attention in the way that nothing else can. Marketers need to know their audience and how to appeal to them.
