YouTube hasn’t had the best reputation when it comes to its policies on anti-harassment. A quick browse through the comments of videos may reveal a slew of less than pleasant conversations. In response, the video platform is ramping up its efforts to deal with harassment by enacting stricter policies on content negatively targeting users based on their sexual orientation, race, or gender expression.

With YouTube’s new policies, comments or videos deemed intimidating or posing a threat will be removed, regardless of whether it’s a commenter, a creator, or even a public official. These changes represent YouTube’s latest push to overhaul its anti-harassment policies and comes after it received attention for not banning a YouTube user who consistently harassed a gay journalist.

YouTube has since refused the user the right to earn money from advertising on the web after much uproar, even though he is still involved online. Repeat offenders are disciplined by withdrawing advertisements from his channel. YouTube administrators can also remove videos or entire channels if behavior leads to those actions.
